Greening the Environment Initiatives Awarded

The Port-PVEV Project, an EU funded project demonstrating energy efficiency in port areas and candidate for the GREENING THE ISLANDS AWARDS won the award for the best sustainable transport measure.  The Port PVEV Project was led by Transport Malta and partnered by the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure, the Port Authority of Catania, the Municipality of Caltanissetta and the Port of Gela.

The award ceremony was part of a three day international conference entitled Greening the Islands with the participation of a number of small islands in the Mediterranean and beyond. The conference which started last Wednesday, incorporated in it Malta’s Second Electromobility Conference entitled The Air We Share which was also addressed by Hon Minister Joe Mizzi and Hon Minister Leo Brincat. Besides sustainable mobility and climate change issues, the conference is also discussing issues relating to energy and water and brings to the table problems and solutions that are shared by those attending the conference.

The Greening the Islands Award Ceremony included in it an Award Ceremony for those local Councils who last year  participated in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans Competition organised by Transport Malta, MEPA, the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure and the Ministry for Sustainable Development, the Environment and Climate Change.

Valletta has received a € 50,000 grant to implement VATIS, a project which aims to supply commuters with real time information on transport access to and from, and within the city through a mobile APP to be developed by Valletta through the project.

The Local Councils of Cospicua, Paola and Qormi have also been awarded € 10,000 each to be used in purchasing an electric vehicle to support day-to-day duties of the local council while maintaining a low carbon footprint.

Cospicua and St Paul’s Bay Local Councils have been announced as the winners (first and second places respectively) for the 2015 edition of the SUMP Competition. Cospicua has won €50,000 for their proposal to deploy electric vehicles and use them to extend a pilot which offers electric cab taxi services to its residents.  The Council proposes to extend the service to the three surrounding cities of Birgu, Isla and Kalkara as well as improve connections from the ferry landing sites to the city centre. 

St Paul’s Bay Local Council will in turn receive € 30,000 for the proposal to install charging infrastructure dedicated to electric bicycles and motorcycles, as well as information and awareness raising with residents on the advantages of this mode of transport.

Vittoriosa Local Council’s efforts to pedestrianise its city core and thus reduce traffic from the urban centre have been acknowledged.  The Local Council has been awarded the Best Sustainable Transport Measure Award which comes in the form of a € 10,000 grant.

These grants have been made available by the Ministry for Sustainable Development, the Environment and Climate Change, the Ministry for Transport and Infrastructure, MEPA and Transport Malta as part of European Mobility Week Malta events.

Between the 26th October and 1st November further events aimed at promoting sustainable mobility are being held in various localities around Malta and Gozo.

Between the 26th and 30th October, Bormla Local Council will be offering free electric taxi services from all parts of Bormla to the city centre.

On 30th October, Għarb Local Council (Gozo) is hosting a workshop on cycling safety and other activities at the main square which shall be pedestrianised for the day.

On 31st October, Għaqda Mużikali Madonna tal-Ġilju will be hosting a workshop on cycling safety, a rodeo for children, an Electric Vehicles Exhibition and other activities at the Mqabba main square which will be closed for traffic for the day.

On 1st November, Birgu Local Council shall host several activities at the city core which will be entirely closed for traffic on the day. Activities include walking tours and electric vehicle tours around Birgu’s historical centre, electric cars and antique bicycles exhibitions, dghajsa tal-pass transport from Birgu to Valletta and Isla will be offered on discounted prices on the day.

Credit goes to the Local Councils of Birgu, Bormla and Għarb andthe Għaqda Madonna tal-Ġilju (Mqabba) for their collaboration.

All the above mentioned events are being held as part of the ‘Do The Right Mix’ Campaign a joint initiative in conjunction with European Mobility Week being promoted by the European Commission to promote urban sustainable mobility.

Feast Celebration in Qormi

The Park & Ride in Marsa and Triq l-Iljun Ħal-Qormi will be closed to  traffic for safety reasons due to fireworks for the celebration of the feast of St. Sebastian.

Triq l-Iljun Ħal Qormi will be closed from Monday 13 to Friday 17 July, except Tuesday 14 July, from 20:00hrs onwards

Marsa Park & Ride and Triq l-Iljun Ħal Qormi will be closed on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July from 17:00hrs onwards.

National Flood Relief Project Works Continue

Triq Naxxar Birkirkara

 In connection with the National Flood Relief Project, Transport Malta notifies that as from Friday 27th February 2015, works will continue along Triq in-Naxxar Birkirkara and should take approximately 2 months. Triq in-Naxxar will be closed in phases, according to work exigencies. Public Transport will be diverted through Triq Ganu and through Triq il-Wied Hal Balzan, depending on the phase in hand.

Transport Malta will be issuing updates and more information about traffic diversions and road closures during the course of implementation.

The National Flood Relief Project is tackling  problems of flooding in three of Malta’s rain water catchments and directly effecting a total of twelve different localities namely Attard, Lija, Balzan, B’Kara, Iklin, Msida, Marsa, Qormi, Zebbug, Gzira, Zabbar and Marsascala. 

Motorists are advised to proceed with caution and to follow signage on site

Road Closed

Traffic Alert – Lija

21 February 2015

Transport Malta notifies that emergency works will be carried out in Triq il-Wied Lija on Saturday 21st February 2015 between 06:00hrs and 15:00hrs.

No road closures will take place.  Motorists are advised to proceed with caution.


Temporary Road Closure – Qormi

21 February 2015

Transport Malta notifies that due to construction works, part of Triq San Edwardu in Qormi, between Triq Antonio Fenech and Triq Zinzel, will be closed to vehicular traffic on Saturday 21st February 2015 between 13:00hrs and 15:00hrs.

Vehicles coming from Triq l-Imdina, Triq Zinzel and Triq il-Vitorja will be diverted onto Triq il-Ġdida.

Public Transport:

Route buses 61 and 209 proceeding from Marsa Park & Ride towards Żebbug, will be diverted at the roundabout of Tal-Imgħallaq onto Triq l-Imdina and follow the normal route to Żebbug.


Malta Marathon Race 2015

22 February 2015

Transport Malta notifies that the following traffic management will take place during the Malta Marathon Race 2015 which will be held on Sunday 22nd February 2015:

Mdina and Saqqajja Rabat – access will be restricted between 07:00hrs and 10:00hrs

Rabat – Triq Għeriexem will be closed to vehicular traffic between 09:00hrs and 09:45hrs

Mtarfa By Pass will closed to vehicular traffic between 08:00hrs and 10:00hrs

Ta’ Qali – access only from near the Military Cemetery between 08:00hrs and 09:30hrs

Attard – Triq l-Imdina, from Saqqajja roundabout to Mriehel By Pass direction towards Valletta, will be closed to traffic between 08:30hrs and 11:00hrs

Attard – Triq il-Linja willl not be closed to traffic but there will be no access from Triq l-Imdina

Attard – Triq il-Pitkali will not be closed to traffic but there will be no access from Triq Durumblat and Ta’ Qali

Birkirkara/Mrieħel – Triq L-Imdina, from Mrieħel By Pass to the roundabout of Fleur De Lys, will be closed to traffic between 09:15hrs and 10:30hrs

Mrieħel By Pass, direction to Valletta – there will be no access from Triq L-Imdina or Mrieħel Industrial Estate between 09:30hrs and 12:00hrs

Hamrun/Marsa By Pass, direction to Paola, will be closed to traffic and there will be no access from the tunnels of Santa Venera

Marsa – Triq Diċembru 13, direction to Valletta, will be closed to traffic from the slip way to Hamrun/Marsa By Pass between 09:50hrs and 12:15hrs

Floriana, Triq Nazzjonali – there will be no access from Hamrun between 09:50hrs and 12:30hrs

Pieta’/Msida/Ta’ Xbiex/Sliema – access from the side roads to Triq ix-Xatt will be limited. Only one lane will be available to vehicular traffic proceeding towards Valletta since participants will be running in the inner lane between 10:00hrs and 13:30hrs

Sliema – The Strand will be closed to traffic between 10:00hrs and 13:30hrs


Road closure – Rabat

23 February 2015

Transport Malta notifies that due to the laying of water and drainage main and the re construction of the road, Triq Vjal il-Haddiem Rabat will be closed to vehicular traffic as from Monday 23rd February 2015 until the end of June 2015.

During phase one, road will be closed from Triq Misraħ is-Suffara to Triq Nigret.

Vehicular traffic and public transport bus route 52 proceeding from  Dingli to Rabat, will be diverted onto Għar Barka, one way down towards Bużugrilla and Mtarfa roundabout.

Vehicular traffic and public transport bus route 52 proceeding from  Rabat to Dingli will be diverted onto Triq il-Fejġel, Triq Hobbejża, Triq Mons. G. Depiro and onto Triq Ħal-Bajjada.

Vehicular traffic proceeding from Triq l-Imdina to Dingli and vice versa are to proceed through Ġorġ Borġ Olivier Rabat.

Motorists are advised to proceed with caution. Any inconvenience is regretted.

Road Works in San Bartolomew Qormi

Transport Malta notifies that due to construction works, part of Triq San Bartolomew in Qormi, between Triq San Bastjan and Triq San Benedittu, will be closed to traffic on Thursday 12th February 2015 between 09:00hrs and 15:00hrs.

Vehicular traffic coming from Triq San Bastjan will be diverted onto Triq San Edwardu.

Public transport:

Route 63 proceeding from Marsa Park & Ride to Qormi will be diverted onto Triq San Bastjan, in front of San Bastjan Church, Triq San Edwardu, Triq Guze’ Azzopardi towards the Polyclinic, proceed to Triq il-Vitorja, Triq il-Hlas and to Ta’ Farzina Estate.

Motorists are advised to proceed with caution. Any inconvenience is regretted.

Transport Malta notifies that due to construction works, part of Triq San Edwardu in Qormi (between Triq Antonio Fenech and Triq Zinzel) will be closed to traffic on Sunday 25th January 2015 between 07:00hrs and 19:00hrs.

Vehicular traffic coming from Triq Mdina will be diverted onto Triq il-Ġdida.  Vehicular traffic coming from Triq il-Vitorja will be diverted onto Triq Zinzell.

Public Transport:

Route Buses 61 and 209 coming from Marsa Park and Ride towards Żebbug will proceed towards the roundabout of Tal-Imgħallaq onto Triq Mdina and follow the normal route to Żebbug.

Triq it-Torri – Sliema

Transport Malta notifies that due to construction works, part of Triq it-Torri in Sliema (between The Strand and Triq Bisazza) will be closed to traffic on Sunday 25th January 2015 between 09:00hrs and 15:00hrs. Vehicular traffic including public transport will be diverted through Tigne’ Tunnels towards Qui Si Sana.

Motorists are advised to proceed with caution.
