Kappara Works at Road Level

Kappara contractor will intensify works at road level starting on Monday.

The contractor will be working on the National Pool side of Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli for the coming weeks.  Part of the street will be cordoned off, however four lanes will remain available.

On Monday night, after 20:00, the contractor will place barriers and paint line markings to shift traffic lanes towards University side.  

From Tuesday morning, the University side of the road, with two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound, will remain accessible for vehicles while the contractor will be working at street level on the National Pool side. The contractor will be installing services, installing storm water systems and lowering the road level.

Transport Malta is installing directional signs to indicate alternative routes while works on Kappara project are ongoing.  Kindly visit news.transport.gov.mt and consult the booklet distributed at home to get familiar with the alternative routes.

Avoid the area whenever possible or else follow temporary signs and official’s instructions.  Respect the speed limit to ensure the safety of workers on site.

Gantry Removal

Kappara contractor will be removing a sign gantry in Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli tomorrow.  The crane will then move the gantry up the road.

Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli will remain accessible but traffic will be diverted to create a safety buffer for the operations. 

The slip road that leads up to the University roundabout will be inaccessible for a few hours.  Vehicles will be diverted to the tunnel below University roundabout. Vehicles must exit onto Triq il-Wied in Imsida to proceed towards Valletta or use Santa Venera roundabout for Birkirkara.

Works are scheduled between 06:00 and 13:00.

Kappara: Stakeholder Meeting


Transport Malta held another Kappara Project stakeholder meeting on Wednesday.  Kappara Project Leader Antoinette Conti gave an overview of the tasks accomplished so far and the programme of works for the coming weeks.

Local Councils, various entities and other stakeholders asked questions, discussed and gave suggestions mostly on traffic management.

Kappara: Removal of the central strip

In the coming days, Kappara contractor will remove the central strip in Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli.  Works will commence today after 20:30hrs. During the night, road will be on reduced lanes in both directions. During the day, one lane will be closed direction to Imsida, at times.

To avoid complete road closure and inconvenience, the central strip will be removed in a sequence of stretches. During works on the central strip, the existing electricity poles will also be shifted. This means that a separate traffic plan will not be required to dismantle the electricity poles.

Transport Malta reminds that Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli is a construction site. Kappara: Works in Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli

As part of the investigations on the foundation material and Enemalta cable works, the contractor responsible for the Kappara project will excavate trial pits in parts of Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli. 

Works will be carried out tomorrow between 09:00hrs and 12:30hrs.  During works, one lane from the roundabout direction to Paceville will be closed to traffic but vehicles can proceed on the other lanes.

New Traffic Arrangements

Following the completion of roadworks in Vjal ir-Rihan San Ġwann, Transport Malta will implement line markings and new signage between 19:00hrs today and 07:00hrs tomorrow morning.

As from Saturday 18th after 07:00hrs, traffic from Triq Tal-Balal will be diverted onto Triq Salvu Busuttil, onto Triq Caruana Dingli and onto Vjal ir-Rihan. Access to the service road at Vjal ir-Rihan will only be permitted from Triq Caruana Dingli. Parking along the service road will be re-organised according to the new traffic flow.

These traffic arrangements are part of the alternative routes during works on the Kappara Project.

Kappara: Works for electricity cable crossing

Kappara contractor will be constructing a jointing bay in Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli as from tomorrow.  Enemalta engineers will eventually use the jointing bay to join electricity cables from Imsida side of the road to Enemalta’s Distribution Centre, on the other side.  The Works will help ensure a constant electricity supply for the area during the works.

The contractor will start the job tomorrow at 09:00hrs.  Part of one lane of three in the direction to Paceville will be closed to traffic for some days.

Geotechnical Investigations in Kappara

Kappara contractor will be extracting earth core samples from Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli, during the night.  Geologists will then conduct geotechnical investigations on the samples to help project engineers during the construction phase of Kappara project.  The investigations determine the earth composition beneath the surface.

The contractor will be drilling after 20:30 to cause the least traffic disruption.  Personnel will be drilling different sections in phases.  One lane will be closed tonight and each night possibly till Thursday.

Kindly follow temporary traffic signs and official’s instructions while going through the area.  Observe the speed limit and be aware of workers on site. 

Kappara: New site access

Kappara contractor will open a new site access in Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli on the side of the National Pool Complex close to the niche, tomorrow after 09:00hrs.

The contractor will close one lane, in University’s direction but vehicles can flow freely through the other lane.
