Gantry Removal

Kappara contractor will be removing a sign gantry in Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli tomorrow.  The crane will then move the gantry up the road.

Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli will remain accessible but traffic will be diverted to create a safety buffer for the operations.

The slip road that leads up to the University roundabout will be inaccessible for a few hours.  Vehicles will be diverted to the tunnel below University roundabout. Vehicles must exit onto Triq il-Wied in Imsida to proceed towards Valletta or use Santa Venera roundabout for Birkirkara.

Works are scheduled between 06:00 and 13:00.

Kindly avoid the area whenever possible or else follow temporary signs and official’s instructions.  Respect the speed limit to ensure the safety of workers on site.

Tidal Lane: Summer time

Tidal Lane

Access to Dock 7 and the Tidal Lane during Summer

Vehicle access through Dock 7 will be closed from tomorrow 8th July at 19:00hrs since the construction of the Mediterranean Maritime Hub now enters a new phase.

Meanwhile, in order to maximise the efficiency of the Tidal Lane, Transport Malta is changing the transition time of the Tidal Lane to cater for the season’s working hours. Transition time is as follows:

  • Sunday to Thursday at 21:00hrs lane direction will change direction to Valletta; having three lanes going towards Valletta and one lane direction to Paola
  • Mondays only at 14:30hrs lane direction will change direction to Paola; having two lanes towards Valletta and two lanes towards Paola
  • From Tuesday to Friday at 13:00hrs lane direction will change direction to Paola; having two lanes towards Valletta and two lanes towards Paola

The tidal lane is a system that changes the traffic direction of a lane  to maximise the capacity of the road.

Dock 7 closed from 8th July

The construction of the Mediterranean Maritime Hub enters a new phase.  Vehicle access through Dock number 7 will be closed on 8th July after 19:00.

Months ago,the road going through the dock was not being used and was turned into a passage way to alleviate traffic in the area.  The access road will now be within a construction site.  It will not be safe enough for vehicles to go through.  Transport Malta implemented a tidal lane system in Paola so vehicles that used to go through Dock 7 will have another lane available in peak hours.

The Mediterranean Maritime Hub will be a maritime service centre for oil rigs and a learning institute.  The €55 million investment is an opportunity for Malta to become a point of reference in the gas and oil industries within the Mediterranean and beyond.

Tidal Lanes

First Tidal Lane in Malta successfully implemented by Transport Malta

Tidal Lane

Transport Malta is pleased with the tidal lane in Paola and is planning similar systems for other roads.

Transport Malta has been monitoring the tidal lane in Sir Paul Boffa Avenue for the past two weeks.  Traffic queues, that dragged until Paola Square and Għajn Dwieli before, have been considerably diminished.  Regular commuters in the area are familiar with the system are using it effectively.

The tidal lane in Paola maximises the capacity of the road. One lane, of the four-lane-road, changes direction according to traffic flow.  Bollards rise on one end of the lane and go down on the other, at 14:00 and at 21:00, to change the direction of the lane. Sir Paul Boffa Avenue has three lanes towards Valletta in the morning and two lanes towards Paola in the evening.  Transport Malta will change the transition times in summer to cater for the season’s working hours.

Transport Malta will implement further tidal lanes in the future.  The Authority is currently designing one in Żebbuġ and exploring other possible sites.

What is a tidal lane?

Transport Malta installed a tidal lane system in Sir Paul Boffa Avenue in Paola and is currently testing it.

The tidal lane is a system that changes the direction of traffic in one lane to maximise the capacity of the road.  The tidal lane in Paola is a first for Malta.

Sir Paul Boffa Avenue is a four-lane road. Such a road is usually split into two carriageways, two lanes northbound and two southbound.  With the tidal lane, one lane allows traffic from one direction during the morning and from the other throughout the evening.  Retractable bollards will control the direction of the lane from both sides.  A set of bollards will be lowered and another raised guiding vehicles to access the lane from one direction or the other.

Tidal Lane

Transport Malta implemented a number of measures to make the transition safe.  Fixed bollards delineate the transitional lane so vehicles cannot veer off in the wrong direction.  Traffic lights have been installed to stop cars from accidentally going over raising bollards.  The bollards will only be raised after officials visually ascertain no cars are approaching.

Transport Malta will change the lane direction at 21:00 to have three lanes going towards Valletta during the following morning.  The lane direction will change again at 14:00 to have two lanes towards Valletta and two towards Paola when most people return home from work.  The tidal lane will maximise the efficiency of the road within the existing capacity.

Transport Malta asks drivers to follow signs and drive with caution especially during these first days of a new system for Malta.
