Transport Malta re-opens Grant Scheme on the Purchase of New Environment-Friendly Vehicles

Following the success of the scrappage scheme launched last December 2015, Transport Malta is hereby extending this scheme for the third time. Another €400,000 has been allocated.

Transport Malta will be receiving further applications for the Grant which will be processed on a first come first serve basis. The initiative is aimed to encourage people to dispose of their old vehicles and to invest in new cars with lower emissions.

1,016 vehicles have already benefitted from this scheme amounting to €800,000.

Vehicle owners who applied for the scheme were entitled to between €700 and €900 upon the purchase of a new M1 motor vehicle (used for the carriage of persons and which may carry no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver, the CO2 emissions of which do not exceed 130g/km and its length does not exceed 4460mm, and is licensed for private use only) that qualifies for the grant scheme whilst at the same time de-registering a vehicle in the same category.

Applications for such scheme are available from Transport Malta, A3 Towers, Rahal Gdid or downloaded from http://www.transport.gov.mt/land-transport

The scheme in the form of a grant to incentivise the purchase of Battery Electric Vehicles and Battery Electric Quadricycles is still applicable.

Kappara Works at Road Level

Kappara contractor will intensify works at road level starting on Monday.

The contractor will be working on the National Pool side of Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli for the coming weeks.  Part of the street will be cordoned off, however four lanes will remain available.

On Monday night, after 20:00, the contractor will place barriers and paint line markings to shift traffic lanes towards University side.

From Tuesday morning, the University side of the road, with two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound, will remain accessible for vehicles while the contractor will be working at street level on the National Pool side. The contractor will be installing services, installing storm water systems and lowering the road level.

Transport Malta is installing directional signs to indicate alternative routes while works on Kappara project are ongoing.  Kindly visit news.transport.gov.mt and consult the booklet distributed at home to get familiar with the alternative routes.

Avoid the area whenever possible or else follow temporary signs and official’s instructions.  Respect the speed limit to ensure the safety of workers on site.

Gantry Removal

Kappara contractor will be removing a sign gantry in Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli tomorrow.  The crane will then move the gantry up the road.

Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli will remain accessible but traffic will be diverted to create a safety buffer for the operations.

The slip road that leads up to the University roundabout will be inaccessible for a few hours.  Vehicles will be diverted to the tunnel below University roundabout. Vehicles must exit onto Triq il-Wied in Imsida to proceed towards Valletta or use Santa Venera roundabout for Birkirkara.

Works are scheduled between 06:00 and 13:00.

Kindly avoid the area whenever possible or else follow temporary signs and official’s instructions.  Respect the speed limit to ensure the safety of workers on site.

Kappara: Stakeholder Meeting

Transport Malta held another Kappara Project stakeholder meeting on Wednesday.  Kappara Project Leader Antoinette Conti gave an overview of the tasks accomplished so far and the programme of works for the coming weeks.

Local Councils, various entities and other stakeholders asked questions, discussed and gave suggestions mostly on traffic management.

Kappara Contractor will intensify works at street level next week.

Tidal Lane: Summer time

Tidal Lane

Access to Dock 7 and the Tidal Lane during Summer

Vehicle access through Dock 7 will be closed from tomorrow 8th July at 19:00hrs since the construction of the Mediterranean Maritime Hub now enters a new phase.

Meanwhile, in order to maximise the efficiency of the Tidal Lane, Transport Malta is changing the transition time of the Tidal Lane to cater for the season’s working hours. Transition time is as follows:

  • Sunday to Thursday at 21:00hrs lane direction will change direction to Valletta; having three lanes going towards Valletta and one lane direction to Paola
  • Mondays only at 14:30hrs lane direction will change direction to Paola; having two lanes towards Valletta and two lanes towards Paola
  • From Tuesday to Friday at 13:00hrs lane direction will change direction to Paola; having two lanes towards Valletta and two lanes towards Paola

The tidal lane is a system that changes the traffic direction of a lane  to maximise the capacity of the road.

Road works in Mellieħa

Transport Malta is carrying out road works in Triq il-Qammieħ Mellieħa, road leading from the area of it-Torri l-Aħmar to Għadira Bay.  Works are expected to be ready in ten days’ time because of extensive concrete works.

Road will remain accessible but traffic will be diverted onto one lane for each direction.

Drivers are encouraged to slow down when reaching the area and to follow instructions by the officials on site.

Dock 7 closed from 8th July

Dock7 copy

The construction of the Mediterranean Maritime Hub enters a new phase.  Vehicle access through Dock number 7 will be closed on 8th July after 19:00.

Months ago,the road going through the dock was not being used and was turned into a passage way to alleviate traffic in the area.  The access road will now be within a construction site.  It will not be safe enough for vehicles to go through.  Transport Malta implemented a tidal lane system in Paola so vehicles that used to go through Dock 7 will have another lane available in peak hours.

The Mediterranean Maritime Hub will be a maritime service centre for oil rigs and a learning institute.  The €55 million investment is an opportunity for Malta to become a point of reference in the gas and oil industries within the Mediterranean and beyond.
