Armed Vessels Warning – only off coast of Libya

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Various sections of the media are reporting that Transport Malta issued a message warning  of dangerous ‘armed vessels’ south of Malta.

The warning applies only to those who venture close to the coast of Libya. There is no need for unnecessary alarm.  The situation next to the coast of Libya has been unstable for a long time.

Nato urges vessels to conduct a thorough risk assessment before travelling through this area and “to do so expeditiously and with increased vigilance”. The message was reiterated in Malta following last week’s incident where an Italian vessel was seized off the coast of Libya.

The Malta Hydrographic Office within Transport Malta promulgated this Maritime Safety Information in line with its international obligations under SOLAS. The Hydrographic Office has the obligation to relay such messages.

Transport Malta re-opens Grant Scheme on the Purchase of New Environment-Friendly Vehicles

Following the success of the scrappage scheme launched last December, the scheme has now been extended. A further €300,000 have been allocated.

Transport Malta will be receiving further applications for the Grant which will be processed on a first come first serve basis. The initiative is aimed to encourage people to dispose of their old vehicles and to invest in new cars with lower emissions.

506 vehicles have already benefitted from the original €400,000 allocated during the last months of 2014.

Vehicle owners who applied for the scheme were entitled to between €700 and €900 upon the purchase of a new M1 motor vehicle (used for the carriage of persons and which may carry no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver, the CO2 emissions of which do not exceed 130g/km and its length does not exceed 4460mm, and is licensed for private use only) that qualifies for the grant scheme whilst at the same time de-registering a vehicle in the same category.

Applications for such scheme are available from Transport Malta, Vehicle Licensing Unit, Hornsworks Ditch, Floriana or downloaded from here.

The scheme in the form of a grant to incentivise the purchase of Battery Electric Vehicles and Battery Electric Quadricycles is still applicable.
